In the OMR Silicon Valley Update Podcast (OMRSUV) hosted by Christian Byza, tech engineer and poker luminary Andreas „Rayo“ Kniep was recently a guest. The Berlin native is known for not taking the most conventional paths, whether in front of the TV cameras at the WSOP Main Event or professionally on his way from Berlin to San Francisco, or from startups to Google Staff Engineer. Accordingly, the German can draw on his wealth of experience and share quite a bit from his personal insights.

Rum Tasting Instead of Rum Questions
Anyone who thought that having Rayo Kniep as a guest would lead to a conventional podcast recording will be disappointed after just a few moments. Instead of a gentle start with questions, there’s hard alcohol to begin with, as Kniep has brought his three favorite rums for a tasting.

Kassel-Munich-Berlin-San Francisco
Born in Kassel, raised in Munich, and studying astrophysics in Berlin, the desire to take a year off grew within him as part of the local startup scene. This led him to the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert and, on his way back, to San Francisco. This would become his new home for the next few years until the present day. From his time in the Hacker House, he networked his way to his position at SpaceX.
The Millionaire Maker Bad Beat Story

The bad beat story from the WSOP Millionaire Maker final table is certainly memorable for the general public, and undoubtedly for Kniep himself. With only 4 players remaining, he held pocket aces when all the chips went into the middle. But despite the dominant hand, the board had other plans and knocked Andreas Kniep out in 4th place with a payout of nearly half a million dollars – while he missed out on further six-figure pay jumps.

World-Class Poker Without Years of Training
Andreas Kniep reveals how he actually got into poker, and why quitting SpaceX was important for it, in one of the longer segments of the podcast. This should be exciting for all listeners with a mathematical or technical affinity, as well as for anyone feeling stuck in the professional rat race.

Elon in the Control Center, Perfect Job Interviews, and What Exactly is “Rayo”?
Anyone who wants to know not only how to get from Silicon Valley to the poker Olympus, but is also interested in Andreas Kniep’s numerous anecdotes, should listen to the podcast in its entirety (perhaps with his three favorite drinks at hand). In it, the overseas poker player reveals not only why Burning Man is addictive, what Elon Musk is like at parties and in the SpaceX Control Room, or how to land the best-paying tech jobs with perfect interview techniques, but also why the digital revolution and a librarian are responsible for his nickname “Rayo”.

Rayo Kniep at the Poker Table
Andreas „Rayo“ Kniep is one of Germany’s top tournament players. With total tracked live tournament winnings of over $1.7 million, he is among the top 50 on the Germany All-Time Money List. His name is often the one poker fans stumble upon in the prestigious list. While the other top 50 players in Germany are or were well-known, Rayo Kniep (along with Jessica Vierling) belongs to the US contingent of German MTT crushers. Through the startup scene and as a Google or SpaceX software engineer, he moved to San Francisco after his astrophysics studies in Berlin.

Since 2017, he has been a regular casher in California and Nevada, i.e., in San Francisco and the Bay Area, as well as in Las Vegas. With only a few months of live tournament experience, he reached the WPT Rolling Thunder Main Event final table and came close to a WSOPC Ring at the WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley as runner-up. He also finished in the top 2 in a ring event at the WSOP Circuit Northern California in Lincoln in both 2023 and 2024. However, the Berlin native was not discouraged and won his first ring that same year, 2024, at the WSOPC Northern California in Rohnert Park – and his second ring a year later at the stop in Rohnert. A WPT Deepstacks Trophy from the Venetian is also already in his trophy collection.

The tech expert gained international recognition through his deep run in the 2021 WSOP Main Event, which ended in 18th place with a payout of $305,000. Even then, he stood out not only for his successful poker moves but also for his flashy outfits, a loud rail, and the iconic mustache on TV.

Two years later, his deep run in another mass event, the $1,500 Millionaire Maker, was no less colorful. In front of the live PokerGO cameras, he came in fourth place, close to a bracelet, and achieved his best live cash to date of $501,182!

In Europe, Kniep is hardly ever active at the poker table. His only recorded tournament appearance outside of America was at WPT Prime in Madrid, where he directly reached the final table in the Main Event.
At the poker table, Rayo Kniep is often found with his laptop. Then he’s not only working with chips but also on the keyboard. In addition to his passion for poker, he pursues triathlon, where he has already finished several middle-distance Ironman competitions (IM 70.3).
What is the OMR Silicon Valley Update?

The OMR Silicon Valley Update is a podcast by OMR co-founder Christian Byza. He himself works in the “Valley” and regularly brings stories from Germans who have made something of themselves there. It’s not about flattery or self-promotion; rather, it’s about learning from the guests’ experiences on the podcast, following their paths through tech companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, or startups, getting inspired, learning from mistakes, or simply hearing stories that wouldn’t otherwise make it out of the Silicon Valley.
