Boxing is having a very hard time at the moment. While it was part of the sport’s nature that individual associations struggled from time to time, the entire sport is now increasingly on the ropes. According to boxing icon Mike Tyson, the reason for this is the overly complex and competing associations and decision-making mechanisms, as well as the lack of opportunity for young talent and amateurs to simply box supra-regionally. The 59-year-old now wants to change this on his own initiative – in his adopted home of Las Vegas, as he recently revealed to ESPN in an interview!

Why now, why Vegas?
When Mike Tyson looks back at boxing in the 80s and 90s, he knows exactly what made him competitive and ultimately the most feared heavyweight fighter in the world:
„Back then, when I was still fighting, we could fight at the Ohio State Fair. Then I went to Colorado for the next two weeks and took part in the national tournament. That’s what we need to be able to keep up with the other countries. We need more competition.“
The fact that boxing as an Olympic sport was on the brink until recently and was only recently confirmed as a sport for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles has significantly increased the pressure to act for the 5-time heavyweight world champion.
„Boxing is dying, and that’s what drives me. If I can be involved in the promotion and development of boxing in any way, I’m satisfied.“

Professional sports and especially the heavyweight class don’t get nearly the attention today that they did decades ago. Exceptions are fights like the one between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford in front of 70.482 spectators right on Tyson’s doorstep at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The fight there was the first to take place under the leadership of UFC CEO Dana White and his new Saudi Arabian partners and was an immediate huge success. This also impressed Tyson, especially how decisions are made under the leadership of Dana White.
„I kind of like this organization. There’s only one man who takes care of everything. That might not work in boxing, but I like the idea.“

With the 3-day amateur boxing tournament, he wants to return to his old roots. He wants to invite talent from all over the country to Las Vegas, encourage them to fight outside their typical sparring and fighting environment, and above all awaken their entertainer qualities, and perhaps find the next Mike Tysons in the process.
„We are all entertainers, especially the fighters. […] My job as a fighter was always to make people happy. […] As a kid, I learned that boxing is about thrilling the audience. – That’s where greatness comes from!“
